Handsome personality

Written by Mr Praveen Kumar & Dr. (Mrs) Sandhya Degala, Viziawada

The Bible says in I Sam 9:2 And he had a son, whose name [was] Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and [there was] not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward [he was] higher than any of the people.

We understand that the handsome personality of King Saul who was anointed by the prophet Samuel and ruled the Israel is mainly due to height of his stature. However during selection of his successor the Bible says in 1Sam 16:7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for [the] [Lord][ seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

It is very clear that the outward personality which was earlier accepted in King Saul's case was considered less important later. We feel like there is contradiction between the above two verses. Is there really contradiction? We also feel that since God's attention was on the heart, God do not care for out ward personality. Is it so?? Let us see in the light of the word of God. The Bible says about King David the successor

1. in 1Kgs 3:6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as [it is] this day.

2. IKgs 3:14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.

3. 1Sam 16:18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth–lehemite, [that is] cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord [is] with him.

4. 1Sam 16:23 And it came to pass, when the [evil] spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

5. 1Sam 17:37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.

6. 1Sam 16:12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he [was] ruddy, [and] withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this [is] he.

Conclusion:- Hence we understand from the word for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart, means God first look at the heart along with the physical out ward appearance as it was said in the case of King David, he [was] ruddy, [and] withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to.

Let us pray for sanctification and preservation Thes 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God] your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1Thes 5:28

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you. Amen.
