1)    Leprosy is a chronic  infectious disease involving skin and nerves of individuals.

2)    It is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium Leprae, closely related to tuberculosis bacteria.

3)    It is spread probably through air ( breathing)

4)    Incubation period is variable between 10-15 years.

5)    It is eminently curable with multi drug therapy ( MDT) for 6 to12 months.

6)    There are 3-4 million people in the world needing on going treatment, to treat the disabilities left by leprosy

7)    Each year about 250,000 cases are diagnosed, in other words, for every 2 minutes one case of leprosy is diagnosed somewhere in the world.

8)    One child is diagnosed with leprosy every 20 minutes.

9)    The top ten countries most cases are detected are India, Brazil, Indonesia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mozambique, Nigeria, Madagascar and Tanzania. Among them India has the most cases of leprosy.

10)   The greatest challenge is not the treatment of the leprosy patient but in over coming the fear and stigma.

11)  55% of leprosy cases in the world are in India

12) Leprosy is particularly prevalent among the poorest and most marginalised communities
